I Bet Your Phone is Within 5 Feet of You at this Exact Moment

Today I have been touched by inspiration. I have been inspired by numerous people to truly reflect on how special life is. Thinking about how technology and our phones have changed us and force us to not look at our surroundings. Instead, they hoard our attention as we mindlessly scroll through our news feed and check our emails. Life is something that is happening around us all the time, and sometimes we miss out on the best moments simply because of that darn device sitting at least 5 feet from you right now.

All of these thoughts about life have forced me to think about the moments in my life where I have truly felt alive. Moments that are so cliche they seem fake. However, those moments are times where every single part of my body has literally felt on fire. It's moments where I can feel the energy in my soul. Times where I just want to close my eyes and absorb every single sense. I challenge you to think about one specific moment that has made you get a similar feeling. A moment where life has felt so real you wish you could go back just to be able to experience the same thing.

There have been multiple times where I have been in a boat with the strong wind catching my hair. Times like these I feel like I'm flying. I feel like it's just me and the water that seems to go on forever. Those moments feel so organic and so rejuvenating that no matter what mood I was in before I feel relaxed. I feel the fire in my fingertips and energy in my soul. I feel untouchable.

Sometimes there are moments where I will be with my friends and looking up at the stars walking in the dark and I just all of sudden feel as if I can't hear anything but the white noise of people laughing and talking. I just look up and smile because I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to be able to experience so many things life has to offer. It's as if I don't hear anything but the sound of my cheeks going up because of how big the smile on my face is.

Music makes me feel infinite. I feel like I can literally sing at the top of my lungs and drive forever. It makes me go back into crystal clear memories. But also creates new ones. Driving with the radio playing way too loud and the windows done is something that makes me feel more alive than almost any other feeling.

Regardless of what feeling it is. What memory or moment come to mind.. life is something that is worth living. Every single second of it. Some people rush around life just going one place to the next and never really stopping to breathe and think about that specific moment, don't be one of those people. Treat every moment like it is the most precious moment you have ever been in. Because when you do, life truly is a gift.

Not So Sunny and 75

Happy Monday to All!

The subzero temps, lack of sunshine, and the fact that there's a whole lot of papers to write might be making for a long week ahead. However, I challenge you to fight those thoughts to bring down your Monday. Choose today as a day to set goals for yourself and attack them head on, make a point to make at least one person smile today and do something for yourself. It is important to seize the moment, but I believe it is more important to seize the day. Having a good attitude and outlook on the day ahead can take you a long way.

Anyone who knows me at all will be able to tell you that I enjoy words, phrases, and quotes. They just click in my mind and bring in such inspiration. My friends and family send my quotes, books, and songs when I am upset or frustrated because they know how words work in my brain. They truly are what keeps my brain constantly working. Reading the words of passionate people who have overcome obstacles to achieve their dreams gives me chills. (I know I know, I'm a "word nerd") So, I thought it may be fitting to share with you some bright and sunny quotes to make this drab day a little more fab.

1. "Find something you are passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it."
- Julia Child

2. "Talking about our problems is our greatest addiction. Break the habit, talk about your joys."
- Rita Schiano

3.  "Trust life a little bit."
- Maya Angelou

4. "May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears."
- Nelson Mandela

5.  "Out of your vulnerabilities will come your strength."
- Sigmund Freud

6.  "We rise by lifting others."
- Robert Ingersoll

7. "If you don't imagine, nothing ever happens at all."
- John Green

8. "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.''
- Aristotle

9.  "I am the one who has to die when it is time for me to die, so let me live the way I want to."
- Jimi Hendrix

10.  "I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious."
- Albert Einstein

The Sweet Things Get Sweeter

Hey Everyone!

Just wanted to share this super cool website I am now writing for. It's a national website for college aged girls. (But anyone who has interest in blogging, writing, people, etc. should read!)  I am currently writing for the Michigan State Chapter! My fellow writers are very talented and passionate. Every week we publish new articles. So check back frequently!

Here's the link: http://www.hercampus.com/author/shelby-komar

Also, I am currently writing a research paper on the comeback of Detroit, what kinds of people are currently living there, and how they are changing the image of the Motor City for the better. Because of this paper I have the opportunity to interview two very passionate professors who are "Detroit Experts." I can't wait to share my paper and interviews with all of you!

Quote of the Day: "It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting."

Book of the Day: 52 Cups by: Megan Gebhart {Haven't had a chance to read this yet, but it's written by a Michigan State Alum who had coffee with people all over the world and wrote a blog post after every cup of joe! Way cool.}

SO many cool things going on right now. It's such a reminder that the most important part of life is surrounding yourself with people who dream as big OR bigger than you. Good people create good vibes. And getting frustrated by the little things and discouraged when things don't seem to be falling into place makes the the sweet things even sweeter.

Don't Be Scared of a Strike Out

Anyone who tells you that they have life figured out is delusional. There's some days where some of us feel like we have it all together and others where we feel like we are just falling apart. But it's part of life. And the days where its the hardest thing in the world to even thinking you even have life close to figured out it's important to take a step back and think of the little things. The things that we are in the process of figuring out. What we are thankful for and how it has shaped the person we have been, who we are, and who we are going to be. So here's my list..

1. My opportunities. I am thankful for the opportunity to go out into this wide world and experience new things on a daily basis. I am so grateful to experience new cultures of people and things here at Michigan State. Without this opportunity I don't feel as if I would have certain views on life and perspectives on the future. Being able to each day experience life as a blank page is something I will never take for granted. Yes, it is important to know who you are. It is important to know who you want to be and stay grounded. But, I believe it is so important to be open to having evolving thoughts and ideas on all things. And if they don't work out, so be it. It's better to strike out then be too scared to go up to the plate.

2. My family. Without my family and I don't know who I would be. People come and go, but my family has always been there. No matter what, my family is my rock. When I am here the things I miss the most are dinners laughing with them and talking about memories. I miss playing board games and getting competitive at Scategories and Catch Phrase. I miss laying in bed with my sisters and talking about anything and everything. Our blood can get on our nerves so much sometimes that all we want to do is escape, and to get away and be on our own. But soon enough we remember that even if they get on our last nerve, we need them like we need air.

3. My experiences. I am thankful for my past. It has made me the person that I am today and I am so grateful for that. Sure, sometimes there's days that are harder than others but at the end of the day going through challenging situations and picking yourself up again makes you stronger. It makes you appreciate the little pleasures and makes the good days even better. Being able to think back on things like running down a hill to the water on a snowy day and seeing the lake is something that makes me feel alive. Driving with the windows down and blasting a song on the radio and feeling like Adele excites every single nerve in my body. Its the raw, organic things in life that make life worth living. The material things, the glamorous lifestyles, the careers and houses, those don't matter unless you feel alive with the things that make this world so beautiful.

4. My #1 fan. I am thankful for this person because no matter what I go through and what I put them through they are always there. They believe in me when I can't believe in myself and make me feel like the future is this expanse of blank canvas that I can throw as much paint as I want all over it and no matter what he will know that it is beautiful. My mistakes aren't seen as mistakes, they are just seen as something that happened. And each and every time I feel frustrated and confused he encourages me to write things down and never lose touch of the woman I am. I am extremely thankful for our experiences. Thinking about certain moments I have had are sometimes the things that put the biggest smiles on my face. I don't know what I would do without this person. Being able to trust someone with everything you have is something that you should never take for granted. On the surface people might think things and not believe in other things but as long as you can listen to your heart the road will always lead in the right direction. Thank you to this person from the bottom of my heart.

5. Today. I am thankful for today. I am thankful that I am able to wake up and have this day. Even if it's a terrible day I am still thankful. Being able to look at things and believe that you can tackle anything is such a blessing. I am thankful for my bad days and thankful for my good days. Being a person who can approach a day with a new outlook is something that I value. Cherish every moment, good or bad because life all works out. There's a reason for today, and a reason for tomorrow. But, you can't think too hard about the reasons. You just have to roll with the ups and roll with the downs and know that no matter what it's going to get better and it will get worse. Life is an ever-changing process.
